Healthy Runner Podcast: How to Train Hills with Coach Elisabeth Scott

There is an interesting interview from “The Trailhead” on Spotify from a couple of weeks ago. “Women Who FKT, Mandatory Gear, & Leaping from 100k to 100 Miles”. Now perhaps not all of this is of interest to you – maybe you’re not looking at 100k, but you should know safe behavior when you get into long runs, and even some good tips for your short runs (1st interview).

We have a lot of good hills here and if you are on Strava and at the top of the speed list for those or your favorite route, get on FKT and get your stats logged (2nd interview in the podcast).

Good for any distance:

  • Let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be out
  • Hydration (it’s already unseasonably HOT out there. Heat exhaustion is real and even on a short run day you should have a little something to replenish what you lose through sweat
  • If you run at night or early morning, a LED flashing light, hi-vis vest, or other reflective gear

Going the distance (be responsible for yourself & reasonable in what you need):

  • Start Early
  • Have a partner
  • Map (paper or downloaded on phone)
  • Emergency battery charger for phone
  • Waterproof jacket/pants (season & location dependent)
  • Safety blanket (LONG runs)
  • Reserve food & water
  • Extra insulation layer/tights and socks
  • Headlamp & extra batteries
  • Moleskin or second skin for blister management
  • Car Keys
  • Share the load of carrying the supplies
  • Understand Risk
  • Good communication with your Running Partners
